Maximizing usable space with sloped properties adds a layer of complexity but has the power to create captivating and intricate spaces. Although this site had its challenges with steep slopes, we were able to maximize accessibility throughout the property while creating a relaxing atmosphere for the clients to enjoy for years to come. The property is now split into 3 levels featuring a large patio for entertaining, crushed stone paths, a sunken vegetable garden, and a remote patio for gatherings around the fire pit.
After existing site elements were removed, initial grading needed to be completed before any other work could start.
The main patio base was laid down after grading was complete and boulders were placed throughout the site to help retain slopes.
Pathways were then carved out and stone risers were placed. The crushed stone for the fire pit patio went in and flat topped boulders were placed around the patio area for seating.
Once the pathways were in, the retaining walls were built and the pavers for the main patio space were installed.
Raised planters were built next which provides ample room for edible gardening or for cut flowers.
Once the planters were built, soil was brought in for both the planters and the planting beds and plants followed soon after.
Before the lower paver landing went in drainage issues were addressed outside of the doorway with a trench drain to make sure water wouldn’t pool in that area. Lighting added the finishing touch along with a decorative wood screen and wood railings.
The installation of this garden took about 2 months to complete and since 2020 the garden has really filled in nicely and has been so well taken care of in the last 4 years. To see more pictures of this project, you can check out our portfolio page here.
