Fall color must haves for your garden

Fall…… ahhhh, breath in the fresh crisp air.

There are some great fall blooming plants but nothing holds a candle to fiery fall colors glowing all around us.

There are too many to list but here are a few of my favorite fall color plants your garden just might need:

Maples:

Everyone loves maples

I know, its a classic and expected but the list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning maples. A few of my favorite maples are Acer palmatum ‘Villa Taranto’, Acer palmatum ‘Katsura’, and Acer palmatum ‘Seiryu’.

Hydrangea:

Oakleaf Hydrangea

This oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) has stunning fall color and is semi-evergreen holding onto majority of its burgundy leaves through the winter. The blooms start white and turn to a burgundy color in the fall as well. In a harsh winter when it looses more leaves you will get to see the cinnamon peeling bark on the stems as a bonus.

Hibiscus:

Hydrangea Midnight Marvel

Not your typical go to for fall color because its hard to forget the blooms long enough to notice the fall color but if you do… wow is it a stunner.

Viburnum:

Viburnum onondaga

There are so many great viburnums. Many are fragrant, a few are evergreen, they are low maintenance and often drought tolerant and you can add fall color to the list as well.

Fothergilla:

Fothergilla gardenii

A true multi-season interest plant. This shrub is great in woodland gardens and in native transition areas. It’s blue green leaves add a touch of calm in the summer but then it comes alive in the fall with its multi-color fall glow.

Katsura:

Cercidiphyllum japonicum – Katsura

This tree is more than just fall color, it adds the intoxicating scent of cotton candy to your garden as the leaves change color. It is fast growing and great for screening and shade. It also thrives in wet conditions making it a good addition to rain garden areas.

What are some of your favorite fall color plants?
